Peacock Expands AI-Driven Live Sports Viewing on Mobile

Peacock is narrowing its latest product push around live sports on mobile, with plans to introduce vertical live game streams powered by AI-driven real-time cropping. According to TechCrunch, the feature will debut in beta during NBA games this spring and is designed specifically for phone screens.

The new format will live inside Peacock’s Courtside Live product, a mobile viewing feature the service introduced during the 2026 NBA All-Star Game. TechCrunch reported that Courtside Live lets users switch between multiple camera angles alongside the main broadcast, and the new AI-powered vertical stream adds another layer to that mobile viewing experience.

The sports angle is notable because Peacock is using AI here not as a recap tool or a fan-facing chatbot, but as part of the live presentation layer. The platform’s real-time cropping is intended to reframe the game dynamically for vertical viewing, which speaks directly to how younger audiences increasingly consume sports content on mobile rather than through a traditional horizontal TV feed. That same article notes Peacock is also expanding vertical video more broadly across the app.

This is not Peacock’s first sports-related AI test. During the 2024 Summer Olympics, the streamer launched a generative AI recap product that created personalized 10-minute summaries of the previous day’s events using an AI voice modeled after Al Michaels. The NBA vertical stream beta suggests Peacock is now moving from AI-assisted recap and personalization into the live sports viewing experience itself.

For sports media executives, the significance is that Peacock appears to be treating live sports as a mobile-native product category, not just a feed that gets repurposed for phones. The combination of Courtside Live and AI-based vertical cropping points to a future in which streaming platforms build alternate live sports formats specifically for handheld viewing, with AI helping reshape the production workflow in real time.
