Anthropic Plans Public Benefit Fund With 5% Equity Commitment

The Claude developer proposes an equity-backed fund that could address AI’s effects on workers, with governance details still to come.

Anthropic announced Oct. 18 that it plans to commit 5% of its shares to the Anthropic Public Benefit Fund, subject to stockholder approval.

The fund’s stake could expand by an additional 2% at the board’s discretion for every 50% increase in company value above a baseline. Anthropic has not disclosed that baseline.

The Claude developer said potential uses include nonprofit grants and direct distributions to specific populations. It identified AI’s effects on employment as one area the fund could address.

Anthropic will structure the fund as a wholly owned LLC. It said the equity held by the entity will not be used for lobbying or political giving.

The commitment adds to founders’ pledges to donate 80% of their equity and an employee equity-donation matching program. Including those arrangements, Anthropic said roughly 20% of its shares would be dedicated to public benefit, before potential future increases.

The company plans to release further information about the fund’s governance and valuation milestones in the coming months. The announcement did not identify grant recipients or a distribution timetable.
