IOC Publishes Trustworthy AI Framework for Olympic Movement
The IOC’s first Trustworthy AI Framework sets seven principles for the Olympic Movement and provides a checklist for assessing risks and safeguards.
Seven principles and a three-step checklist give sports organizations a process for assessing AI risk and safeguards.
The International Olympic Committee has released its first Trustworthy AI Framework for the Olympic Movement, setting out seven principles for organizations developing, buying or using AI systems. The framework was developed with Deloitte and shaped by input from more than 200 leaders across the Olympic Movement, including athletes and specialists in sport, governance and technology.
The principles address safety and security, personal-data protection, reliability, transparency, accountability, fairness and sustainability. The IOC said they are intended to apply throughout an AI system’s lifecycle, from design and procurement to implementation and ongoing use.
An accompanying Trustworthy AI Checklist guides organizations through three steps: assess inherent risks before controls are applied, consider how the principles are addressed across the system’s lifecycle, and identify improvements, resources and people who can help strengthen its use.
“But technology must always serve sport — not the other way around.” — Alejandro Merino-Madrid, Head of Artificial Intelligence, IOC
The IOC said responsibility for developing and deploying AI remains with the organizations using those systems, taking account of their operating environments and applicable rules. The framework and checklist are available to Olympic Movement stakeholders, including organizations just beginning to explore AI.
