ONE Championship’s AI Rankings Put Transparency at the Center of Fight Storytelling

The promotion’s refreshed standings begin with four Muay Thai divisions, putting the focus on how AI rankings earn trust and support fight storytelling.

ONE Championship has relaunched its official athlete rankings with an AI-powered system, introducing a new approach to evaluating contenders and framing the path toward title opportunities.

In its September 25 announcement, the promotion said the system analyzes performance metrics, bout results and historical data. The initial rollout covers flyweight, bantamweight and featherweight Muay Thai, along with women’s atomweight Muay Thai. ONE plans to extend the rankings to additional weight classes and to MMA, kickboxing and submission grappling, but did not provide a specific completion date.

The promotion presents the standings as a foundation for matchmaking and world-title contention. Its public rankings page lists a champion and five contenders in each of the four divisions, with the initial standings dated September 22.

For sports business executives, the significance goes beyond an updated list. Rankings are part of a property’s storytelling infrastructure. They give audiences a way to understand contenders, follow an athlete’s progress and assess the stakes of an upcoming contest. A consistent ranking process can also give editorial and broadcast teams a common reference point.

AI could help maintain that structure as a property adds events, athletes and disciplines. However, describing a system as AI-powered does not establish that its judgments are objective. The inputs selected, the treatment of past results and the importance assigned to different measures all shape the output.

ONE’s announcement does not disclose the model, its weighting rules, a validation study or the extent of human oversight. The public rankings page provides standings but not a detailed methodology. Those gaps limit what outsiders can conclude about the system’s accuracy or fairness. The rollout should therefore be understood as an announced approach, not independent proof that AI produces better rankings.

That distinction matters particularly in combat sports. Opponent quality, activity levels and movement between divisions can complicate comparisons. Different disciplines also reward different skills. Extending a system across Muay Thai, MMA, kickboxing and grappling will require a clear explanation of how those differences are handled.

A useful transparency framework would explain which results qualify, how recent performances affect standing, how inactivity is treated and who can correct an error. It would also distinguish a ranking from a guaranteed title opportunity. A published position can inform matchmaking without resolving every scheduling or sporting decision.

There is a content opportunity here, too. Rankings changes can support athlete profiles, pre-fight explainers and recurring analysis between events. The strongest version would explain why a position changed, using verifiable performance information. That gives audiences more to engage with than a number appearing next to a name.

Those are potential applications, not commercial outcomes ONE has reported. The announcement does not establish an increase in audience engagement, sponsor value or revenue from the new system. Any assessment of business impact will need evidence over time.

For emerging leagues and combat sports properties, ONE’s rollout raises a practical question: what should a ranking system make clearer for the audience? AI may support the calculation, but credibility depends on understandable rules, reliable data and accountable decisions. The real test will be whether athletes and fans can follow the logic behind the standings as readily as they can follow the fights.
