Pongbot Takes AI Training Hardware to the Australian Open

A multi-year agreement pairs Grand Slam visibility with a supply role in Australia’s player development pathway.

Pongbot has been named Official Ball Machine of the Australian Open and Official Ball Machine Supplier of the National Tennis Academy, under a multi-year agreement announced September 28.

The partnership brings the company’s training equipment into the Australian Open 2027 program and Australia’s performance pathway. Pongbot says its products, including AI Coach, will support repeatable practice, performance analysis and data collection. It also plans an Australian Open-branded machine carrying both organizations’ identities.

For a specialist hardware supplier, the two roles serve different commercial purposes. A Grand Slam association provides visibility among players, coaches and recreational customers. An academy supply relationship creates an opportunity to demonstrate the equipment in demanding training settings. Together, they could help the company connect product awareness with practical experience.

The National Tennis Academy sits at the top of Tennis Australia’s development pathway, supporting talented players as they move toward professional tennis. Its involvement makes the training application a meaningful part of the agreement, alongside the tournament branding.

In the announcement, Haibo Zhang, CEO of Pongbot, described the company’s ambition as helping players translate sustained practice into progress. Cedric Cornelis, Chief Commercial Officer of Tennis Australia, pointed to the potential for new training approaches and player development. The release does not provide evidence of measured performance gains from this deployment.

For academy operators and tennis clubs, the useful question is how intelligent equipment changes a training session. A machine that reliably repeats a drill can give a coach more time to observe technique and discuss adjustments. Recorded session data could help track the work completed over time. The value depends on whether those functions fit the coaching program and produce information staff can use.

That suggests a straightforward evaluation: time spent setting up drills, consistency of delivery, coach and player usage, and the usefulness of the information captured. Performance improvement would require a longer assessment, since equipment is only one contributor alongside coaching, fitness and the player’s practice habits.

The partnership also offers a modest example of how sports properties can develop supplier categories around emerging technology. A narrowly defined role gives a hardware company a clear place in the event’s commercial program. A corresponding use in training gives the rights holder something to assess beyond brand exposure.

For Pongbot, the Australian Open relationship could open conversations with coaches, academies and clubs in other markets. Its commercial strength will depend on the experience those customers have with the equipment after the tournament attention passes. The agreement gives the company a prominent stage and a practical setting in which to demonstrate its technology.
