NBCUniversal Adds AI Agents to Upfront Media Buying With Carat
NBCUniversal, Carat, FreeWheel and Newton introduce custom AI agents for upfront media investment, beginning with an unnamed luxury retail client.
A custom buying agent links audience and campaign signals to NBCUniversal upfront inventory, with human oversight retained.
NBCUniversal is introducing AI agents into advertising workflows through a media planning, buying and optimization offering developed with Carat, FreeWheel and Newton.
The companies announced the capability Oct. 6. NBCUniversal highlighted it in an Oct. 12 recap of industry events in New York and Miami, alongside its pitch around fandom, premium programming and live sports.
The offering is designed to optimize advertisers’ upfront commitments across NBCUniversal inventory. Its first deployment is with an unnamed Carat client in luxury retail, using an agent customized to the advertiser’s objectives.
The system combines dentsu audience insights and NBCUniversal’s identity data through the FreeWheel Identity Network, alongside campaign performance and market signals. Recommendations draw on measures including search lift, trends and competitive activity.
Built on FreeWheel Buyer Cloud, the offering incorporates Newton’s technology within dentsu’s operating workflows. The partners said human expertise remains central to strategy and activation.
Carat said it is building additional agents tied to client performance goals and plans to expand to more brands, video networks and industry categories. The announcement did not report measured campaign gains.
NBCUniversal’s broader advertising pitch emphasized brands participating in fan communities through talent, social media, experiences, commerce and custom content. Its live-sports discussions included LA28 and the role of major events in connecting advertisers with audiences.
The buying announcement spans NBCUniversal inventory. It does not identify a sports-only product or a named sports campaign using the agent.
