ChatGPT Becomes Presenting Sponsor of NFL on CBS Sideline Reports

OpenAI has added a high-profile sports media sponsorship to its growing advertising push, with ChatGPT now serving as presenting sponsor of sideline report segments during NFL on CBS broadcasts.

The integration debuted during CBS coverage of the New York Jets-Tennessee Titans game, where play-by-play announcer Spero Dedes introduced reporter Aditi Kinkhabwala with the line, “As we go downstairs for the sideline report, presented by ChatGPT, here’s Aditi.”

The sponsorship places the ChatGPT name and logo directly inside a recurring editorial element of CBS’s NFL coverage rather than in a conventional commercial break. It also comes as OpenAI continues to build advertising into a larger part of its business model, both inside ChatGPT and across external media.

The placement drew immediate attention online, with viewers reacting to the pairing of an AI brand with a segment built around live reporting, interviews, and human interaction from the field.

The timing also created an unusual juxtaposition across CBS programming. Later that evening, a new episode of 60 Minutes ended with correspondent Ross Douthat delivering a “Last Minute” commentary focused on the risks of increasingly capable AI systems and the urgency around AI safety.

“Right now no story looms larger than the latest developments in artificial intelligence. An AI system solved a math problem in 88 hours that human beings have struggled with for almost 100 years. Other AI hacked into companies on their own, and this past week a researcher quit a major AI firm, warning that if artificial intelligence gets out of control, it could wipe out the human race.” – Ross Douthat, Correspondent, 60 Minutes

Douthat added that society may have a narrow window to address AI safety and closed by tying that warning to the role of journalism as the technology develops.

The CBS sponsorship arrives during a rapid expansion of ChatGPT Ads. OpenAI began testing advertising inside ChatGPT in the U.S. in February 2026 and has since expanded internationally.

On August 31, OpenAI said ChatGPT Ads had reached a $1 billion annualized revenue run rate less than 200 days after launch. The company says the platform is used by tens of thousands of advertisers and that ChatGPT now reaches more than 1 billion weekly active users.

Advertising is currently shown to users on ChatGPT’s Free and Go plans. OpenAI says ads remain clearly labeled, separate from ChatGPT responses, and do not influence the answers generated by the assistant. Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Edu users do not receive ads.

OpenAI has also expanded the ways advertisers can buy inventory. The company introduced a self-service Ads Manager, cost-per-click bidding, campaign objectives, and additional measurement tools earlier this year. Its current platform supports CPM, CPC, and conversion-optimized CPC buying.

The company’s advertising strategy is centered on reaching users while they are actively researching, comparing, and making decisions. OpenAI says conversational context can help make ads more relevant than placements based primarily on conventional search keywords or audience targeting.

The NFL on CBS sponsorship extends that brand-building effort beyond the ChatGPT interface and into premium sports programming.

It also follows an increasingly visible marketing battle among major AI companies. Anthropic used its first Super Bowl advertising campaign earlier this year to position Claude as an ad-free alternative to ChatGPT, while OpenAI used the same game to promote Codex.

The ChatGPT sideline sponsorship adds another AI company to a long list of brands using NFL broadcasts to build consumer awareness, but with a category that is still generating significant public debate around automation, employment, trust, and the role of AI in media.

CBS has not disclosed the financial terms or length of the sponsorship.
